Judith Patino-Rodrigue is a writer, coach, and speaker whose words are equal parts heart and humor. Her book, Steer and Maneuver, encourages readers to take control of their lives with clarity, courage, and a wink. In this interview, Judith reflects on her journey, voice, and what it truly means to grow with grace.

Your personal story- from growing up in the Dominican Republic to becoming a published author and motivational voice- is so inspiring. Can you share how your life journey shaped your passion for storytelling and helping others grow?
I moved to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic at fourteen, pretending I spoke English with nothing more than “yes” and “no” in my back pocket. Since then, life has taught me that we’re not stuck—we get to choose what kind of life we want. I’ve lived the ups, downs, and detours, and I’ve learned to say no to what doesn’t align with my purpose. That’s what fuels my storytelling and coaching: helping others realize they can steer their lives too—with clarity, courage, and a little humor along the way.
What three words best describe you- not just as an author, but as a person on a mission to inspire?
Bold. Uplifting. Unfiltered.
I speak from the heart, write with purpose, and toss in a wink or two while I’m at it. I feel I’m here to shake people awake—in the most loving way possible (most of the time). I believe in telling the truth, even if it stings a little. Sometimes we need encouragement; sometimes we need a reality check. I like delivering both—with compassion, humor, and just enough fire to get people moving.
Were there writers or creative influences in your family or community that helped shape your voice?
Yes—my father was a journalist and published author. Although I didn’t grow up with him, I always admired his work. I started writing early on (first in Spanish, since it was my first language) because I also dreamed of becoming a published author. But it wasn’t until I lived through some of life’s biggest setbacks—and got back up stronger each time—that my true voice emerged. One shaped by experience, grit, and a deep desire to help others rise, too.
Steer and Maneuver brings humor and heart to life’s challenges. What inspired you to frame personal growth through such a light and joyful lens?
Because, well—life’s messy, unpredictable, and sometimes downright ridiculous. So why not laugh while we grow? I’ve lived through some heavy stuff, and I realized later on that humor was my lifeline. It kept me grounded, sane, and moving forward.
I wanted Steer and Maneuver to reflect that—that personal growth doesn’t have to be stiff or serious. It can be playful, honest, and a little mischievous. A wink here, a wiggle there, and suddenly you’re learning deep life lessons without feeling like you’ve been hit over the head with a self-help manual. And I’ve been hit with those a lot!
There’s a sense of celebration in everything you create- from books to exercises. What does it mean to you for someone to truly ‘own their story’ and live it out with confidence?
Owning your story means embracing every part of it—the highs, lows, and messy middle—and realizing it’s what makes you powerful. That’s when the real celebration begins—not because life got easier, but because they stopped waiting for permission to be fully themselves.
Is there a personal story in Steer and Maneuver where humor helped you overcome a tough moment- and still makes you smile today?
While Steer and Maneuver leans more into mindset and reflection, my book Golden Cot is packed with personal stories—and one in particular always makes me smile. In a chapter called “We Sin. The Earth Roars,” I share how, during an earthquake in the Dominican Republic, the entire town dropped to their knees in the street, begging God for forgiveness. I was terrified. But then I looked up and saw my grandmother casually strolling toward us, smiling with bags of groceries—as if to say, “Keep praying if you want, but I’ve still got dinner to make.” Her calm, grounded presence taught me that humor and perspective can steady us—even when the earth is literally shaking.
Your books often explore the idea of abundance and self-belief. How do you define abundance in your own life right now?
To me, abundance is feeling deeply fulfilled and grateful in all areas of life. When I wake up content—with who I am, what I have, and where I’m going—I know I’m living fully. True abundance isn’t found in things—but with the peace and purpose within.
Sharing your books in both English and Spanish adds such richness to your work. How has this bilingual approach deepened your connection with readers?
It lets me speak to the heart—in two languages.
Your children’s series Tales of The Estates is inspired by real-life moments. What kind of values or messages do you hope young readers take away from those stories?
I want young readers to see that kindness is strength, curiosity is power, and being different is something to celebrate. These stories are little life lessons wrapped in fun and imagination—encouraging kids to be brave, think big, and lead with heart.
How do you shift your creative voice when writing for different audiences- like children, adults, or coaching clients- while staying true to your message?
The heart of the message never changes—it’s always growth, joy, and self-belief. I just adjust the delivery. For kids, I wrap lessons in imagination and fun. For adults, I add humor and a reality check or two. For coaching, I keep it clear and actionable. Different voices, same soul.
You also lead workshops and talks that focus on mindset, confidence, and purposeful living. What is the core message you hope participants walk away with after attending your sessions?
That they’re not stuck—they’re in the driver’s seat. I want them to leave knowing they have the power to steer their lives in any direction they choose, as long as they get clear, stay honest with themselves, and take that first bold step.
Can you share a memorable moment from one of your workshops when you felt the audience truly connected with your message- or even had a breakthrough?
Absolutely. One moment I’ll never forget was after a workshop I delivered to a mostly male audience—very results-driven, straight-to-the-point types. I wasn’t sure how my message would land, but something clicked. By the end, they all stood up and gave me a standing ovation. That moment reminded me: when truth meets the right delivery, it connects—no matter who’s in the room.
You also mention that all it takes is about 60 seconds to reset your mindset- what’s one of your favorite quick mental shifts that readers can use anytime?
One of my go-to resets is a quick gratitude scan. Wherever I am—stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck—I pause and name three things I’m genuinely grateful for. Or sometimes, I smile. For nothing. Just because smiling makes you feel goooood all over. In 60 seconds or less, the noise fades and clarity comes in.
Your YouTube mini-talks offer quick doses of motivation and clarity. What inspired you to speak directly to your audience in that format, and what kind of feedback means the most to you?
I wanted to meet people where they are—on the go, in the middle of life, needing just a little clarity or encouragement to shift their day. These talks are short, real, and to the point—like a pep talk from a friend who believes in you.
And when it comes to feedback? I don’t need applause. If just one person thinks to herself—even without saying a word—“That message was exactly what I needed today,” I’m fulfilled. That’s the win.
Many of your blog posts and talks invite people to slow down, reflect, and realign. In a world that moves so fast, how do you personally create space for stillness and intention?
I start by giving myself permission to pause. That might mean sitting quietly with my morning coffee, taking a walk, chilling with the wild birds and squirrels that visit often, or simply breathing and checking in with how I actually feel. Stillness doesn’t have to be dramatic. I like creating small, sacred moments where I can reconnect with my true self and realign with what really matters.
Your free resources offer practical, heartfelt steps for change- but they also carry your voice and spirit. How do you make sure your digital tools feel like a personal conversation with the reader?
I write them as if I’m sitting across from the reader, coffee or wine in hand, talking one-on-one. My goal isn’t to lecture—it’s to connect.
As you look ahead, would you be open to sharing what’s next for you? Are there any upcoming books, workshops, or projects you’re excited to bring to your readers?
Currently, I’m recording the Spanish audiobook of Steer and Maneuver, titled Dirige y Maniobra, which is expected to be released in the next few months. I’m also working on a novel—more personal, more layered, and definitely a creative leap I’m excited to take.
And of course, I’m still going full speed with our family-owned company, J’s Waterproofing, while creating and coaching in between. There’s always something brewing—because I just don’t know how to stay still. Life is short. I make the best out of my time in it.
