What is Personality – Definition, Meaning, Types of Personality, Factors

“Personality” always directs the mind, towards the physical appearance of an individual. Here we are talking about something which covers not only physical but also mental and psychological aspects, something which presents you in front of the community and society. The judgment of an individual, by society, is based on its personality, so it is very necessary to have a good personality.

Brinkerhoff defines personality as the unique attributes and abilities of the individual.

Dewy and Humber look at personality as the way by which the individual is interrelated through ideas, actions, and attitudes to the many non- human aspects of his/her environment and biological heritage

Personality is those qualities through which you present yourself in front of others, these are such qualities that decide your reaction on an action of a person. It covers everything of an individual, for example walking, talking, treating and handling problems. It is a tool that measures the confidence of an individual.

There are three types of personalities explained by sociologist they are:-

  • Introvert
  • Extrovert
  • Ambivert

Persons having introvert personalities prefer to spent their time with themselves more than spending time with others. Such a person lacks the confidence to present themselves in front of others. Studies show the following qualities of introverts:-

  • Good listeners
  • Self-sufficient.
  • Super focused.
  • Easy to please.
  • Very observant.
  • Good at studying.
  • Trustworthy people.
  • They remain in touch with their feelings.
  • Committed to their goals.

Extroverts are opposite to that of the introvert. They like to spend more time with others as compared to themselves. they are never seen alone, like introverts.

Ambiverts are the persons who are not bothered whether they are provided company or they are left alone. they are considered to have qualities that are a mixture of both extroverts and introverts.

Being an extrovert, introvert or ambivert, i.e. personality decides how a person will react to a particular situation? i.e.one situation may have different reactions if it is experienced by persons having different personalities. For example, it is the personality of an introvert that allows him, to maintain and handle a situation peacefully and it is the personality of an extrovert, due to which, they are unable to solve a simple problem just because of their personality does not allow them to solve it.

A very simple way to improve one’s personality is, to keep confidence in oneself that is whatever the person is doing, his work is correct and he is doing correctly. this statement holds good for all persons having any personality, whether extrovert, introvert or ambivert.

Interacting with others is also one of the most important parts of improving one’s personality. When an individual interacts with others, then he understands the way of handling people of different thoughts. And this is the reason why, in comparison to an introvert, extroverts have better personalities.

Personality is considered responsible to all those activities which a person does; but to explain the reason for the development of such personalities, These factors are used by psychiatrist also, to help those persons who are a victim of anxiety. These are:

  • Physical Environment
  • Biological Factors
  • Social Factors
  • Cultural Factors
  • Situational Factors
