Forms and Functions- Slavery, Estate and Caste systems

Many sociologists have said in their research work that society has its basic parts, which should work in a set pattern so that social harmony is always at peace.

People have their own needs, and they behave in a manner that can be beneficial to every aspect or key element of society. Society is always demanded in its best form no matter what perspective you use to achieve it, be it functionalist, conflict or interactionism.

For example, our society also contains many kids who have a basic right to education, but the other parts of this chain of education are missing, like schools that are not available or no teacher to make them understand anything. In this case, the integration process of summing every element fails, and thus it requires every factor or element of society to function properly.

As the interactionism theory deals with day to day life activity its main function is to observe every detail of human behavior regarding everyone and everything. A person can learn most of the small things in this function of society where he learns the act of kindness, several things he should say, the right place and right person to share something. For example, meeting new people while travelling comes under this theory where a person tends to learn a lot of things because of the change of place and meeting new people.

According to Bertrand, to completing human needs various social relationships are established in an institution called a society. If any of the relationships break at one point, it will ultimately make other relationships suffer. For example, if you want to complete a car racing competition and you have made the car, the engine is working properly, your team members are present for your motivation but the driver said no at the time of the competition will never let you win in that competition. The function of everyone in the competition was interrelated to each other which should have been performed in sync to get the maximum output.

According to Merrill, he defined society as the interrelation of pattern, opinions, and norms for a functioning.

Functions of Social Institutions viz. Society:-

  1. Nothing is permanent and human beings are also one of the mortal things. But the function demands a continuous effort from human beings. Thus if anybody leaves the society, does not mean his/her post has to be vacant all the life. The position should be handed over to someone else. For example, if a country’s prime minister has died due to some health issues, his/her place should be handed over to someone eligible as soon as possible otherwise the country security can come into danger.
  2. The production rate and the consumption rate should follow each other in a manner that it does not affect society in a way that could not be recovered. For example, the demand and supply graph of any graph follows a manner that there is no shortage of any material in need.
  3. Many times we are engrossed in old beliefs but that will not make our society a better place. Time to time it needs a leader to change views and policies. Thus there should be self-awareness and open-minded people to adopt some of the changes designed for betterment. For example, if a black cat has come into your path by accident, it does not necessarily mean to sit at home idle; it is an old belief which should be left behind.
